High prison sentences and punishments don't seem to be a significant crime deterrent. Makes sense. Teens are headstrong; prison is a far off possibility. Far more probable is that an increase in the chance of being caught leads to reduced criminal activity instead.

I guess the thing is, prison sentences are not meant to be a deterrent. They’re a punishment. While in jail, the public is protected from the inmates.
